Or, sew it begins. *snicker* Couldn't help it.
So, what's wayward?
Wayward is an adjective meaning difficult to control or predict because of unusual or perverse behavior. Synonyms of stubborn, obstinate, contrary, disobedient, difficult...these all fit. And they fit in the way I sew.
I jump in half cocked. I buy fabric that I may have no idea how to treat. I dye textiles off the cuff and never measure gram weights for accuracy. I modify patterns as I see fit. Techniques I've never tried? Bonus, let's do it. Make a muslin? Nope, I'd rather not. If I'm googling and youtubing a technique during construction, you know it's right up my alley.
Recently I've begun to actually do things the "right" way. Correct temperature settings on the iron. Proper needles. Checking pressure foot and thread tension. Staying on point with the seam allowances. Making muslins for garments constructed out of woven materials. I'm in the middle of a fitting class on Craftsy. I've taken half a dozen other classes on Craftsy (as an aside, what an awesome platform). I don't know that my projects will ever hit RTW level, and I currently don't care.
I don't know that I'd call that reform, because I'll always be obstinate. If I paid for the fabric, it's not going in the scrap heap. I *will* find a way to make it work.
As for my history as a sewist, I got my first machine as a young teenager, and used it to refashion clothes. Poorly. I constructed my first quilt with my aunt and grandma when I was 19. I started embroidering onesies on an embroidery machine before my middle child was born. I also started playing around with batiking and textile dyeing. I started sewing cloth diapers when she was about 1. I sewed and sold fitteds with organic bamboo velour and fleece and batik fabrics. I kept all my mistakes. I love them still. I started children's apparel...last year? The year before? I sew for my enjoyment, for my children, and for close friends who I know appreciate the time and effort put in. I don't sew for profit right now. I don't want to haggle over prices and deal with CSPA compliance and deadlines. I'm not here to make a deal and devalue the love that goes into every piece.
So what's the point here? I want a place to post my projects. My successes, my failures. And by golly, I want in to the Curvy Sewing Collective.
